Holiday job scrub cutting. Dick far right. FAMILY ARCHIVES

WHEN TERM STARTED AGAIN, I WAS HURRYING OFF TO CLASS by myself one day when I saw Dick coming towards me, also in a hurry, also alone. We stopped and talked. He asked me to go to the movies with him, and I agreed. He has been the man in my life ever since.

At the end of our two-year training, we were required to do our probationary assistant year to complete certification. Dick decided he wanted to stay in Wellington and was permitted to do this by changing places with a friend who was not part of the ‘quota’ system but wanted to teach in ‘Māori schools’. Exchange was made easier by the fact that there were no positions available in Dick’s particular area anyway. He had somewhere to live in Wellington because his sister, her husband and family had moved into a Ministry of Works house in Elsdon, Porirua, and were happy to have him stay. He was successful in getting a Probationary Assistant position in Tītahi Bay North Primary School. I took up a position at Linden Primary.
